Art Film for February 2018

What does Black History Month have to do with a naked Picasso? The answer is in Faith Ringgold's The Last Story Quilt video.  This will be the first part of a double feature shown on February 13th, Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. in the Vineyard Center. The second video is Faith Ringgold Paints Crown Heights. The art world categorizes her as an American Artist and a “pioneer in quilt as an art form.”  She states that “expressing cultural differences through folktale” has been  her artistic goal.

Born in New York City in 1930, she was influenced throughout her formative years by

her parents' active participation in the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural movement. Later she trained throughout Europe, taught in elementary schools and combined these experiences together to create a unique art form which elevated folk story quilts to high art. Ringgold's work hangs at the Guggenheim, The Met, the National Museum of American Art in DC and other major museums. Her work will soon be on exhibit at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA from February 18th thru May 23rd.

Ringgold's quilts piece together stunning combinations of color with narrative designs telling the stories of American diversity which build communities. To learn about how a naked Picasso is part of the story and more, join us at the Vineyard Center on February 13th Tuesday at 7:00 P.M.
